The Nurse Speak® Strategy

Leverage what you know to be true.
Decide on purpose. The AADPIE method for clinical judgment — the NCLEX® decision framework behind every Nurse Speak® program

Most nurses learn this the hard way, over years, through decisions that did not go well. It does not have to take years. That is the whole reason The Nurse Speak® exists.

NURSING SCHOOL TEACHES NURSING.
HERE, YOU LEARN HOW TO DEVELOP STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS!

You graduated knowing an enormous amount of nursing content. Pharmacology, pathophysiology, assessment, the whole lifespan, diseases, reference ranges, how to do skills. You can recall it, you can define it, and you can demonstrate understanding.

Then you sit for the NCLEX®, and it does not ask what you know. It asks what you would do. Or you walk onto a unit, and the patient in front of you does not match the classroom lesson. Or you are three years into a career that is slowly becoming someone else's idea of your life, and nobody ever taught you how to leverage what you know to choose differently.

Those are all the same exact issue, just showing up in different ways. It's not a knowledge problem at all. It's a decision-making problem that requires tried and true strategies from someone who has already been exactly where you are.

Understanding nursing was never the hardest part. Learning how to make nursing more effective, streamlined, optimized, monetized, and aligned with YOU is the part that takes YEARS of struggle to figure out.

Nurses who get good at deciding often get there by accident — years of practice, a few painful mistakes, and if they are lucky, one good mentor who told them the truth. That is a slow, frustrating & really expensive way to learn something that can be taught more effectively & directly.

The Principle

LEVERAGE WHAT IS TRUE.

Every good nursing decision rests on something that does not move: a rule, a principle, a guideline, a piece of evidence. Safety first. Maslow. Airway before everything. Assessment before intervention. Least invasive before most. These are not opinions and they are not preferences. They are true, and they are true whether or not you remember the specific content a question is testing.

That is the leverage. When you can name what is true about a situation, you can set the criteria for a correct answer before you ever look at the options. You stop choosing between four things that all sound reasonable and start measuring four things against a standard.

The same move works outside the exam. A career decision gets easier when you stop asking what feels appealing and start asking what is actually true about your strengths, your constraints, and what the role requires. A facility's onboarding program gets better the moment someone asks what is true about why new nurses leave in the first ninety days, instead of just guessing.

Intentional. Objective. Evidence-based. Not three nice words — three tests a decision either passes or fails.

The Framework

THE AADPIE METHOD

Six steps. The same six, every time, whether you are working a question, a patient, or a career decision. Repeatable on purpose — a method you have to improvise is not a method.

The nursing process is the strategy: assessment, analysis, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation — critical thinking is outcome of leveraging the nursing process.

ASSESS

Gather what is actually in front of you before you do anything with it. Most wrong decisions are made on incomplete information that felt complete at the time.

ANALYZE

Sort what matters from what is distraction. What is this situation really about? What is the question actually asking?

DIAGNOSE

Name the problem. Not the symptom, not the complaint — the actual, factual, objective issue. You cannot solve what you have not named.

PLAN

Set the criteria for a correct response before you look at your options. This is where leveraging what is true does its work.

IMPLEMENT

Act on the plan. Choose the option that meets the criteria you set, not the one that feels familiar, comfortable or pleasant.

EVALUATE

Did it work? What would you do differently? This is the step many people skip, and it is the one that compounds. How can you open up a business if you haven't objectively evaluated your skills, products or services?

In Practice

ONE METHOD, THREE PLACES IT WORKS.

On the NCLEX®

The exam is built to measure clinical judgment, not recall — that is the whole point of the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model. AADPIE is how you meet it on its own terms: read the stem, name what is true, set your criteria, then choose. It works on questions whose content you do not know.

In your career

Nurses rarely leave the profession because they chose wrong. They leave because nobody taught them how to choose at all. The same six steps turn a vague feeling that something is off into a named problem with a plan attached — and a plan that can actually work.

Career coaching →

Inside an organization

A facility losing new nurses in ninety days usually has a diagnosis problem, not an effort problem. Assess what is really happening, name it, build the onboarding to match, then evaluate whether it held. Same method, bigger room.

Where This Came From

I WATCHED GOOD NURSES STRUGGLE - THEN LEAVE.
SO I DEDICATED YEARS AT STUDYING WHY.

I watched eager new grads fail the NCLEX®.

That was not acceptable to me, so I stopped looking at the content and started studying the exam itself: how the NCSBN Clinical Judgment Measurement Model works, how scoring works, what actually happens when you run out of time, where test-takers struggle the most. What I found was that the exam was never really testing what everyone was studying for.

I founded The Nurse Speak® in 2016 to teach what I found. The method has since been tested on first-time test-takers, repeat test-takers, orientees starting their first nursing job, preceptors, managers, professional nurses changing direction, and the organizations that employ them all.

“I took the NCLEX-RN exam three times before getting into Damion's NCLEX Strategies for Success Program, and in just a couple months of reviewing and following his program, I was able to FINALLY pass the NCLEX and get my RN License! I worked as an LPN for 1 year while trying to pass, and I wish I got into this program right out of nursing school!”
