5 Ways to Make a Great Impression During Clinicals
Every nursing student wants to make a good impression during clinical. This is especially important in order to maximize learning opportunities and build strong working relationships with nursing instructors and experienced staff. Because nursing is multifaceted and often stressful, finding common ground can sometimes be challenging. Here are five simple ways to make a strong and lasting impression during clinical.
Show Up to Clinical Prepared
The best way to make a good impression is to arrive fully prepared. This includes:
Arriving on time, every time
Studying material related to the clinical setting
Wearing the proper uniform with ID badge
Bringing essential supplies such as a stethoscope, pens, notepad, scissors, pen light, and watch
Reviewing patient history, lab values, vital signs, imaging reports, and provider notes
Always Ask Questions
Asking questions helps instructors and nursing staff understand your learning needs. If you don’t ask, others may assume you already know. Seeking clarification is essential for growth and safe patient care.
Offer Extra Help to Others
When classmates or staff become busy, ask how you can help. Simple tasks like assisting a patient or helping during a procedure demonstrate teamwork and initiative.
Remain Professional at All Times
Professional expectations are outlined in nursing student handbooks and facility policies. Avoid slang, profanity, inappropriate jokes, or oversharing personal information. Clinical time is an opportunity to be noticed by potential employers.
Demonstrate an Eagerness to Learn
Instructors appreciate students who are curious and motivated. Embrace every learning opportunity, even if it feels uncomfortable. Each experience builds confidence and competence.
Best Wishes!
