As a nursing student, you’ve worked hard to get to this point, and you don’t want the NCLEX to hold you up from beginning your rewarding career! NCLEX Success for Nursing Students really should start from day one of your Nursing program. Despite where you are in your Nursing program, now is the time to start becoming more proficient and confident in your ability to answer NCLEX questions accurately. Below are some tips for maximizing your NCLEX success.

Know the NCLEX (NGN) Exam Format

The NCLEX is a computer-adaptive test (CAT) that adjusts the difficulty of each question based on your answers. This means that you must understand the format and structure of the test to effectively manage your time and answer questions accurately.

Study and Practice High-Quality NCLEX Materials

The best way to prepare for the NCLEX Success for Nursing Students is to study and practice frequently. Utilize NCLEX review books, study guides, and practice questions to familiarize yourself with the types of questions you will encounter on the exam. There are a lot of resources out there and many are out to just make a quick buck – so be careful! If you need expert insight, I’d love to help you navigate which are the best.

Create a Study Schedule

Plan a realistic study schedule that will allow you to review all the necessary information before the exam. Make sure to stick to this schedule, and don’t wait until the last minute to study. For NCLEX Success for Nursing Students, I recommend that you dedicate 2 to 4 hours per day of uninterrupted study time for NCLEX prep. Be sure to RESIST the urge to study for more than 4 hours each day. Research shows that over studying reduces effectiveness of retention, and only adds to frustration and burnout. Also, do not study while multitasking. If you try to do too many things at once, none of those things will be done well. Study smart, not hard!

Get Enough Sleep

A well-rested mind is better able to retain information and perform under pressure. Make sure to get enough sleep the night before the exam. Studies show that a minimum of 6 to 8 hours of sleep each night is essential for optimal brain function. If you’re having a difficult time falling asleep, be sure to create a bedtime routine that limits caffeine and electronic screen time. Avoid caffeinated beverages after 12pm and turn off the TV, computer, cell phones, etc. after 8pm. Sometimes a nice peaceful walk after dinner can really help you to wind down and get ready for bed. If you work overnight, here are some tips to help you optimize your sleep routine.

Manage Your Time

In order for you to optimize your ability to apply and analyze NCLEX questions correctly, you must be mindful of your time. This includes your dedicated study time, when you’re reviewing Nursing content and the time you are completing practice tests. When you are practicing questions, be sure to read each question carefully, and don’t waste time on a question that you don’t know the answer to. Move on to the next question and come back to it later if you have time. When you’re practicing, timing yourself for each question isn’t essential until you’ve mastered the strategies. Once you’re confident in your ability, your speed will improve. Focus on accuracy first, then you can work on how fast you can complete the questions.
